Gemmological Institute of India (GII) Collaborates with SIGMA University to Launch Formal Education Programs in Gems & Jewellery

In a ground-breaking collaboration aimed at shaping the future of the Indian gems and jewellery industry, the Gemmological Institute of India (GII) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SIGMA University, Vadodara to offer specialized diploma and degree programs in Diamonds, Gems, and Jewellery.

The Gemmological Institute of India, a leading laboratory, education, and research center, was established by prominent trade bodies including:

  • Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB)
  • Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC)
  • Gem & Jewellery Exporters Association (GJEA)
  • Mumbai Diamond Merchants’ Association (MDMA)
  • Diamond Exporters Association Limited (DEAL)

This partnership aims to foster professional excellence in gemmology through structured academic learning.

Industry & Academic Leaders Speak

Mr. Mehul Shah, Chairman of GII, commented:

“This partnership aims to professionally train the next generation of experts in the field, blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with structured academic learning. This collaboration is especially important for the artisans who are the lifeline of the industry. A professional qualification will help them enhance their social status and gain greater recognition for their craft.”

Dr. Harsh Shah, President of SIGMA University, stated:

“At SIGMA University, we believe in empowering industry through education. This collaboration with GII reflects our commitment to equipping students with globally relevant skills while honoring India’s legacy in gems and jewellery.”

A Significant Step for India’s Global Trade Role

India plays a vital role in the global gems and jewellery trade, contributing 7% to the national GDP and accounting for 15% of India’s merchandise exports. With 90% of the world’s diamonds processed in India, and 15 out of every 16 diamonds polished by skilled Indian artisans, the country remains a global leader in this sector.

Diamonds are crafted with precision artistry, featuring up to 58 intricate facets, with some cuts as fine as the point of a needle.

New Programs to Be Introduced

As part of the collaboration, degree programs such as:

  • Bachelor of Diamonds
  • Bachelor of Jewellery

will be launched at GII, affiliated with SIGMA University. These programs are designed to bridge the gap between traditional skill-based learning and modern professional training, equipping students with knowledge in both technical and business aspects of the trade.

Mr. Mehul Shah expressed his sincere appreciation to Dr. Harsh Shah and the SIGMA University team for their commitment to this visionary initiative, stating:

“We are excited to work together in building a stronger, more educated future for the gems and jewellery industry.”
