India concluded the Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai after four days of discussions focused on strengthening trust, transparency and long-term sustainability across the global natural diamond ecosystem.
Held under India’s Chairship theme of Credibility, Compliance and Consumer Confidence (3Cs), the meeting brought together government representatives, industry leaders, civil society organisations and stakeholders from across the international diamond value chain to discuss the future direction of the natural diamond sector.
India, which remains the world’s leading hub for diamond cutting and polishing, used the platform to reinforce its position on responsible sourcing, stronger governance and consumer confidence at a time when transparency and traceability are becoming increasingly important for the industry.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal stated that the natural diamond sector supports millions of livelihoods across producing, processing and consuming countries and reiterated India’s commitment to ensuring the Kimberley Process remains relevant in an evolving marketplace.
Discussions during the Intersessional covered key themes including governance reforms, monitoring systems, operational improvements, artisanal production, transparency initiatives and measures aimed at reinforcing confidence in the natural diamond trade. Delegates also discussed communication strategies to convey better the impact of responsible sourcing and the role of the Kimberley Process in supporting communities globally.
Industry stakeholders believe the discussions have reached an important phase in the natural diamond business, where evolving consumer expectations and digital verification systems are increasingly shaping buying behaviour.
Offering the industry’s perspective, Kirit Bhansali, Chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, said:
“Over the last four days, we have seen constructive dialogue among governments, industry and civil society on advancing the 3Cs framework—Credibility, Compliance and Consumer Confidence.”
Bhansali further noted that discussions surrounding supply-chain transparency, compliance mechanisms and certification systems are becoming increasingly critical as global markets place greater emphasis on sustainability and traceability. He added that maintaining trust in ethically sourced natural diamonds remains essential for the long-term health of the sector.
The Mumbai Intersessional is expected to serve as a key step toward the Kimberley Process Plenary scheduled later this year in New Delhi, where many of the discussions initiated during the meeting are likely to move toward broader implementation and policy direction.
For India, the outcome further strengthens its position not only as a global diamond processing centre but also as a key voice in shaping the future framework for transparency and responsible trade in natural diamonds.
