GSI Strengthens Industry-Academia Collaboration Through Internship Program with Dr. Homi Bhabha State University

Reinforcing the importance of industry-academia collaboration, Gemological Science International (GSI) has expanded its partnership with Dr. Homi Bhabha State University through an internship programme that provides chemistry students with practical exposure to advanced gemological laboratories and scientific instrumentation.

The initiative enables students to bridge classroom learning with real-world laboratory practices by working alongside GSI scientists and gaining hands-on experience with sophisticated analytical technologies used in gemstone testing and material analysis. The programme aims to equip aspiring scientists with practical skills while introducing them to career opportunities within the gem and jewellery industry.

The internship programme builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously signed between GSI and Dr. Homi Bhabha State University to promote education, research, technological learning and stronger collaboration between academia and industry.

As part of the programme, students receive practical training on advanced analytical instruments including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy, UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF). These technologies are widely used not only in gemology but also across material science, pharmaceuticals, forensic science, environmental monitoring, geology and industrial research.

Speaking about the experience, a student intern from Dr. Homi Bhabha State University said:

“Through this internship, we can see how the instruments we study in theory are used in a professional laboratory. It helps us understand how chemistry connects with gemology, material analysis, and many other career paths in research and industry.”

Beyond technical expertise, the internship focuses on strengthening analytical thinking, scientific methodology and attention to detail while exposing students to professional laboratory standards. The programme also offers participants an opportunity to explore gemology as a potential career, introducing many chemistry students to an industry they may not have previously considered.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Ramit Kapur, Managing Director, GSI India, said:
